On our recent road trip to Putaruru John and I also stopped and had a quick walk in Maungatautari. This amazing area, which we'd heard about for quite some time, is located approximately an hour from Struan Farm. It has been created with 47 km of pest proof fence to allow for complete regeneration of native bush and wildlife.
The Southern Enclosure, which is accessed via the village of Pukeatua, is the showcase area open to the public, with a 16 metre high canopy viewing tower that allows visitors to climb up and be amidst the birds and the trees. Rare birds such as takahe, stitchbird and kaka can be seen. A variety of walks suit all levels of fitness.
There are both guided day and night walks, with a guesthouse and restaurant, "Out in the Styx" nearby, although it's an easy day trip from Struan Farm.
For more up to date information see the Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust's website.
