One year during my annual trip to LA I discovered these amazing "donut" peaches at the South Pasadena Farmer's Market. I was staying with my friends the Olinskis in Pasadena, and ended up using the fruit to make a delicious peach crumble to try to say thanks (once again) for putting up with me as a house guest.
The grower told me that they were an heirloom variety. The fruit was juicy and sweet, and they were incredibly easy to peel by hand, no blanching required.
Once I got back to NZ I tried to find them here. The next year, they started appearing in New World Market, one of our supermarket chains, and were being called "flattos." So we can get this peach in NZ, it even has its own website here, but what about the trees?
As fate would have it, the leading and (perhaps only) nursery in the country growing the trees is in the Nelson area, Waimea Nurseries; nearby Mapua Country Trading is able to order them. But they're in such demand that orders are taken at least a year in advance.
Ours is meant to be delivered this winter for planting in Struan Farm's orchard, yippee!
