John recently mentioned to me that there is a special tree in the garden at Struan Farm called "The Judas Tree," one that should definitely remain as we start to reshape and update the garden.
Once again the tree reference books were pulled from the shelf, something that is becoming a regular occurence and has us wondering if we're simply becoming old and boring (John), or perhaps more intellectually curious (Karen). Its proper name is Cercis siliquastrum and it is part of the pea family, Leguminosae. Interesting, Anna has one that already has pods this year, while ours doesn't as yet:
The kidney shaped leaves are quite attractive, but it also has beautiful pink flowers in spring.
Legend has it that it is from this tree that Judas Iscariot hanged himself after betraying Christ. That's a bit creepy, even if we do like the tree.
