I've been in a bit of a pickle over where to plant my sweet pea seeds at Struan Farm this year.
The perfect spot is the fence between the garden and the Pet Paddock, where we plant our sunflowers during the summer. However, two problems with this: (i) sweet peas are poisonous, so we can't have them anywhere near sheep tempted to nibble, and (ii) John is meant to replace this fence with a new one "shortly."
We consulted, as spouses (should) do, and decided that when John constructs the new fence it will go further along inside the Pet Paddock. So conceivably the old fence could remain to support the sweet peas as long as it might be needed. Problem #2 was solved.
With respect to problem #1 I decided not to plant along the length of the fence, but rather prop up two old gates inside the garden by the fence and plant seeds along those. Hopefully these will be sufficient barriers to protect both the sweet peas and the sheep!
I'll plant the rest of my seeds in other areas of the gardens, just not sure where as yet!
Hi Karen, I'm so excited for spring planting. I love the old gate and fence posts! What a great backdrop for sweet peas!
