The recent Embellishment Workshops at Struan Farm taught by Lisa Cruse during her holiday in New Zealand were simply fantastic. We were so lucky to have her visit us in Piopio, willing to share her passion for her craft and art. It was contagious!
Ahead of the sessions we worked together to assemble a variety of materials that would enable her to teach basic techniques but more importantly to inspire creativity amongst the participants. I'm happy to report that this worked as planned.
The first day started with basic techniques for needle felting, ribbon/fabric roses, embroidery and beading. The second day explored more complicated design elements, color theory, and how to combine the various techniques.
Themes coming out of the discussion included:
--Don't play it safe, except with the felting needles, which must be "parked" when not in use! Definitely look to create outside your own comfort zone, or you'll just keep doing the same old thing.
--Use colors that glow and pop for stunning effect.
--"Audition" materials and colors to see what you like best.
It was a great group of ladies who supported and challenged one another to experiment.
I spent most of my time playing hostess organizing the food, but I did get to spend some time around the table at the end of the second day, starting to develop and "audition" embellishments for my recently felted hats.
Below are some photos from the two days:
