I don't always pronounce things properly in the Kiwi context, and "herbs" would definitely be one of those things. I vacillate between a hard H the Kiwi/English way, as in "Herb Alpert and the Tiajuana Brass," and "urbs" the American way a la (adulterated) francaise.
It's gotten to the point that I'm not aware of what I'm saying when I say it. What I can say is I've been buying quite a lot of "herbs" this past week, however you want to say it, to fill up the big round trough in the new veggie garden area at Struan Farm. Basils, dill, oregano, thymes, parsley, sages, tarragon, chives, lemon balm, marjoram. (The chervil was looking a bit ratty, so I have yet to plant that.) I've got a rosemary hedge down below on each side, English lavender in a circle around the bottom, and mints planted in their own segregated trough.
I've FINALLY been able to use the beautiful herb markers I bought quite some time ago from Country Trading, made out of recycled old spoons.
And p.s., although I've planted quite a number of tomato plants, you won't catch me calling them "to-mah-toes!"
Wow, lovely Karen. So happy to see our markers have such a posh pad to reside in. Heather
