I was interested to read recently that mottled, end-of-season hydrangeas are now being called "antique hydrangeas" by the floral trade, and sold for commercial arrangements. I've always loved using them here at Struan Farm. Weather conditions need to be right for interesting variations in colours to result, also for the flower heads not to get too dried out, withered or brown.
Here are some of ours from the gardens right now. I have gone a bit overboard with the pics, but thought they were interesting:
I must say though that I'd always thought that "antique" was defined as something that was over 100 years old, while "vintage" and "collectible" were used for younger items. So perhaps these are "vintage" hydrangeas rather than "antiques," since our oldest hydrangeas would only be approaching 65 or so? We'll go with that--vintage is much more trendy!
