Our former pet lambs surprise us when we least expect it. You will know that they are now out running with the mob of other lambs at Struan Farm. Sometimes I manage to get a look or a "baa" when I call out to them. Usually I can walk up to Rosie and Pip to give them a good scratch, they still remember me and aren't afraid. Pepper and Ruby are a different story, it's up and down with those two, but then that's always been the case.
Last night John went out after dark to dust some wasp nests. Often the nests are in the ground, or in an old stump. They only get larger if left untreated, which can be dangerous. Trying to sprinkle dust in daylight can prompt a swarm, so isn't all that smart. It's best to go out when they're asleep. So off went John after dinner with torch and dust in hand.
Shortly after he left the house I heard hoots and saw a waving light outside in the paddock. I was able to make out John standing beside a lamb. It was Rosie--apparently she had seen the light and recognised John! She came up and jumped up on him for a reassuring pat. He thinks she might have been asleep and was frightened by the torch, but was very happy to see her old friend John, the very same John who did morning bottle duty on weekends.
He couldn't believe it and neither could I, but then Rosie's always been a special lamb.
awwwwwwwwwww!
