Interesting to learn this past weekend from sister-in-law Julie that our English Laurel trees at Struan Farm have dark purple edible fruit at this time of the year. Something that John and I had never noticed. And so we keep learning from the trees and gardens around us (as well as from the Robertson siblings). Or better perhaps to say "being educated."
Prunus laurocerasus is commonly called "Cherry Laurel" or "English Laurel." The leaves and fruit pips are poisonous. The birds seem to love the fruit. People have reportedly confused these with Laurus nobilis, bay leaves that are used in cooking, and this is not a good thing to do! They do look very different although both can be used for hedges. When in doubt, check it out...
