I need to make a confession: I sampled the first nashi grown at Struan Farm. I pulled it off the tree and bit into it, didn't wait for John. He'll get over it. It was AMAZING, a complete surprise. Juicy and delicious, quite flavourful. My only experience with nashi has been the supermarket kind: crisp and crunchy but with little taste. This is a completely different fruit, and I want more of them.
We purchased our Nashi Dual: Nijiseki/Hosui tree last winter from Masons Garden Centre in nearby Te Awamutu. The tree is actually a graft of two different varieties, so self-pollinating. I sampled the Nijiseki fruit, which has yellow green clear skin, the Hosui is brown russet skinned.
We will be planting another one of these this winter for sure--Masons here we come!
