It's time for a bit of seasonal transition in the backyard veggie gardens here at Struan Farm. Spent tomato plants have been pulled up, except for a few with some decent fruit still green and ripening. Those plants remaining have been trimmed up so that the fruit is exposed and can ripen asap. Broad beans, silver beet/swiss chard and peas have been planted, along with winter lettuces, kale, and second instalments of beets and carrots.
One final job outstanding was to clean out the potato patch, a complete weed fest. One can't really weed when the potatoes are growing; if one pulls weeds one risks pulling out green potatoes as well. And so "one" waited while the weeds grew along with the potatoes.
Everything is now weeded and all of the remaining potatoes dug. Quite the harvest! I'm not sure what we'll do with them, perhaps we will share the wealth.
