A few days ago when I was moaning about being on my hands and knees planting circles of daffodils around a number of new fruit trees, friend Katherine queried me on just what varieties of fruit we'd planted here at Struan Farm. I came up with a list in response that amazed even me. Yep, we're "tutti frutti" here in Piopio!
Apples: Monty's Surprise, Peasgood Nonsuch, Initial, Granny Smith, Akane, Liberty, Bramley, Cox's Orange Pippin.
Plums: Omega, Satsuma, Green Gage, Elephant Heart, Black Doris, Santa Rosa (Luisa is coming).
Peaches: Black Boy, Golden Queen plus two self seeded from Piopio gardener Karen Jones and one from Northland.
Nashi: Nijiseki/Hosui
Feijoa: Kaiteri + one "I forgot to save the tag."
Pears: Winter Nellis, Doyenne Comice.
Quince: Giant of Gascony, Smyrna
Plus: figs, lemons, mandarin, lime, Cape Gooseberry, Cherry Guava, blackcurrants, Jack Humm crab apples, elderberries, cherry, passionfruit, pomegranate. The last two are really experiments, I'm not sure we can grow them in Piopio. The dwarf lime tree is in a pot, and travels in and out of the glasshouse depending on the season after I lost one outside to frost last year.
Not everything is fruiting just yet, but we'll get there over time. I'm thinking about planting one more variety of apple (Fairbelle) and one more of quince (BAC29), maybe also some grape vines...
