While it's been quite rainy here at Struan Farm, it hasn't exactly been a cold, cold winter thus far. Not that I'm complaining because it hasn't been cold! But it does mean one has to think about the timing for cutbacks of various things in the gardens, namely hydrangea, roses and apple trees. I guess that last one is technically pruning rather than cutting back.
The past few days I started with the hydrangeas on Hydrangea Hill and also trimmed those up in the new(ish) house gardens (which aren't quite so numerous, or established). Last year I wasn't all that ruthless with my cutbacks, wanting to make sure we had heaps of flowers for the December wedding scheduled for the Homestead gardens. But this year they need a decent chop or they'll get overgrown. Even if it means fewer flowers. I'll make my way around the Homestead garden areas over the next week or so, assuming the weather cooperates.
I'm about to crack into trailer load #4 when the weather permits.
