The courier arrived at Struan Farm this week with a delivery of bare root roses I'd pre-ordered from Matthews Nurseries in Wanganui. It's also "that time of the year." In the past two weeks I've sprayed copper and oil on our 40 or so roses around the gardens, cutbacks happen in July. But it's also time to plant new roses in the new beds at the new(ish) house.
I've planted "My Mum," "Paddy Stevens," "Dublin Bay," "Frilly Jilly" and "Platinum" in three of the new beds, along with "Compassion" and a cutting of our heirloom orange rose. My vision for the bed that runs alongside the long fence is an avenue of roses. John brought up four rustic totara posts to make supports for four of them, an idea borrowed from the rose gardens at the Auckland Botanic Gardens.
We'll see if reality cooperates with my vision later this year, won't we?!
