It's getting a bit biblical here at Struan Farm, at least in terms of pests. Thankfully no floods at the moment.
We've been trapping possums daily, putting poison out for the rats, and trapping the odd mouse now and then. A week or so ago an upswing in the magpies started happening. They are noisy, aggressive, territorial birds that attack and kill our native birds. Last year we trapped over thirty, at which point we lost count. So we're having to start that again too.
At first we thought we were dealing with a family of six, and were four down, two to go after the weekend. But I woke up one morning this week to eight more on the scene. The whanau had either sent out an SOS to extended cozzie bros to come help them try to get birds out of the trap, or this is another mob moving in. Either way thought we had two to go but it's now ten. So "magpies" have now been added to Mike's daily "to do" list.
