I've been noticing the brilliant yellow ginkgo trees around the King Country this autumn, they really stand out in the landscape. And (of course) we have several here at Struan Farm. Our largest one in the Pet Paddock was planted by John's dad Maurie in the early 1950's. Turns out she's a female that fruits. The fruit has a rather distinctive, somewhat "rotten," odour that people moan about, but our girl isn't too bad on that score. You can pick up a whiff now and then but she's reasonably discreet. The leaves are fan-shaped and quite beautiful too.
Fossilised remains of "Ginkgo biloba," which is native to China, have been found dating back 270 million years. I wait to rake up her leaves until last since they create a vibrant golden carpet on the Pet Paddock ground.
