You will think we have been celebrating a fair few birthdays around Struan Farm of late, and that would be right. Granddaughter Ella recently turned ten, and of course we needed to celebrate that big event with her here at Struan Farm over the weekend. I whipped up Chelsea Winter's dairy-free "Crazy Italian Chocolate Cake," topped with Ottolenghi's fabulous "Maple Syrup Icing."
It was served with dairy free coconut ice cream for some and regular ice cream for others. Since The Birthday Girl had moaned about having to be dairy-free for her birthday, and restrictions on that score have been somewhat relaxed, the icing in this instance wasn't dairy-free. But we went naked so the amount of icing wasn't overwhelming.
