John returned home to Struan Farm from our weekend trip to brother Carrick's having scored a new/old "rammer." Our old one recently got broken. "Rammers" are used to pound dirt in a fence post hole. In these days of modern machinery they are rather antique implements, but they come in handy on hills or when the odd hole needs to be dug.
Both of these were made by John's dad Maurie many years ago. The new one is pink and on the left. As you can see they are made of hard wood and have metal wraps at the bottom. There was some discussion that the metal on the pink one might have been forged at the Piopio blacksmith, in the days when there still was one. The pink paint was used as an undercoat or primer for wood "in the day." You see it on weathered sheds and old barns around the rural countryside, it took me awhile to figure that out.
Yep, we continue to reuse/recycle here at Struan Farm, for as long as we can!
