I've been counting birds AND bees here at Struan Farm. We've also taken part in the Great Kiwi Bee Count. It runs until 30 September, so it's not too late to take part. This count only takes two minutes. You pick a flowering plant and count and note the various types of pollinators, logging that info on the website. It can be done by phone, tablet or your computer.
I picked a flowering pieris next to our house, which had a good number of honey and bumblebees. It was the first sunny day and they finally came out. But I wish that I'd waited, since our awanui cherry trees have heaps of honey bees and bumblebees.
While everyone knows about the plight of honey bees, and that we should plant flowers that provide food for them, did you know that bumblebees are seriously amazing pollinators too? They beat honey bees, hands down. I've just joined the Bumblebee Conservation Trust to try to support them too.
