At least they're higher than last year, the tomato stakes that is. John designed, and nephew Mike constructed, a support structure for some of my heirloom tomatoes this season in the new bed in the backyard here at Struan Farm. Since we rotate our veggie and tomato beds, it's meant to be taken down at the end of the season, put away in shed somewhere and then moved elsewhere next summer (perhaps the other side of this bed).
The raised bed in the front has been refilled with fresh soil, mulch and organic matter, so is good for tomatoes again this year.
I've pledged to stake properly this year and cut off the shooters. I will try my best, I truly will. I'm just not sure if sixteen plants is going to cut it for me. Last year we maxed out at 30 in beds and pots, but then it wasn't the best of seasons either. I guess I'll know when the sixteen are planted and I've still got heaps of excess seedling plants to use or give away!
