We seem to have reached "peak poppies" here at Struan Farm this week. I'm hoping we don't have heavy rain or wind for awhile or everyone will swoon over. At that point the gardener has to crack into action, saving seed heads and pulling out the plants that have done their dashes.
When I think of poppies I always think of "The Wizard of Oz," and that scene where the Wicked Witch of the West conjures up a field of poppies to put Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion and the Scarecrow to sleep to stop them from reaching Emerald City. Fortunately Glinda the Good Witch makes it snow, which wakes them up. As we all know from the "Wicked" books and musical, the Wicked Witch wasn't quite so wicked and Glinda wasn't quite so good. Hollywood has been known to turn things on their heads.
Here at Struan Farm witches don't feature, just peak poppies. And trust me, no one has time to fall asleep!
