For some time now we've been wanting to confirm the type of conifers that are in a cluster on the knob out from our house at Struan Farm. John and nephew Mike have been working to clean up this area so that the trees are more prominent, and the view more open. Recently we had an arborist come in to take down a huge redwood tree and limb them up as well.
But it was sister-in-law Julie and her husband Scott, visiting from Canada, who were able to identify the trees for sure: they are Douglas Firs. Julie also told me there's an interesting legend about the cones. The tree sheltered mice during a great forest fire, and you can see the mice hiding in the cones. I can see them, can you?
