I was down around the Homestead gardens at Struan Farm this week, checking on the status of ripening apples and figs in the Old Orchard area. Not quite yet on those.
But I was surprised when I walked into the Pet Paddock to find myself kicking up nuts that have already started to drop under our two walnut trees! Hmmm, that's usually April. I had my basket with me and commenced the annual harvest. Now to keep at it every other day or so so that I beat the rats and the turkeys (and Clifford) to the best nuts.
Like most things this year it seems autumn is coming a bit early too.
p.s. I am going to try to keep up with shelling the walnuts this year as they dry. I am. I really am. It's not quite as serious a pledge as learning to stake the tomatoes properly and pinching those laterals off the plants to avoid a tomato jungle, but it's my intention. Really.
