It's the time of the year to be saving seeds here at Struan Farm. I've saved heaps of flower seeds: echinacea, nigella, scabiosa, astrantia, echinops, and poppies, along with tomato seeds of course. I toss some of the flower seeds into the gardens now to give them a head start on next year, but save enough to spray around in spring as an insurance policy.
It's also time to get onto the flax. We've grown a reasonable number of flax plants from seed previously for John's extended native bush reserve along the stream to the Mangaotaki River, but we need quite a few more.
Seeds from the chocolate brown flax beside our drive have been harvested as well as the huge flax down at the edges of the main pond. Variety in size and colour is good.
Now just to get them planted.
