John is always proud of himself when he discovers something "blog worthy" around Struan Farm, and this would be one of those things:
A rotting tree stump along the roadside Pet Paddock. Normally I classify tree stumps as blights on the landscape, and order their removal as soon as practically possible, but in this case I'll make an exception. Two different fungi, "turkey-tail porebracket," Tramete versicolor, and "orange porebracket," Pycnoporus coccineus. The ruffles are quite interesting, don't you think? The turkey tail looks almost like agate.
With thanks to Geoff Ridley's "Mushrooms and other fungi of New Zealand."
