The recent arrival of the King's Seed catalog gave me a bit of a jolt. It's almost time to get the glasshouse cleaned out and gear up to start growing tomato, veggie and flower seedlings here at Struan Farm. Tomato seeds get planted in August, and we're almost there.
I had a good time thumbing through the catalog and making decisions. Lots of tomatoes (of course), lettuce/mesclun, radish, cucumber, chiles, beans, corn, pumpkin, zucchini, butternut squash, herbs and flowers, edible and otherwise. I've also got heaps of seed saved from last season to use, mostly tomatoes and flowers.
This also prompted me to get out and pot up 80 flax seedlings that have been growing in seed trays in the glasshouse. I'll need the space for veggie and flower seed trays, the natives I grow for John will be moved outside shortly. In addition to the flax, I managed to get six tawas (trees) to germinate from seed, but unfortunately no totara, which was quite disappointing. I'll have to try those again next year and figure out what I did wrong.
