Apologies for the late post today, but we had the official opening of Piopio's "Community Fruit & Veg Stand" this morning. The weather gods cooperated, despite the terrible forecast the sun graced us with its presence. As did a good group of locals, bringing along contributions from their gardens.
I was amazed by the variety, especially at this time of the year. By midday we had on offer: lemons, limes, mandarins, grapefruit, kiwis, walnuts, butternut, kamo kamo, chokos, pumpkins, lettuce, silverbeet/swiss chard, spring onions, garlic chives, parsley, rosemary, coriander, elephant garlic, silverbeet seedling plants, various types of homemade jams, homemade chocolate sauce & lemonade, fresh farm eggs, and homemade muesli.
Now to keep this rolling along after the initial burst of enthusiasm. I've had several people offer to keep an eye on the stand, which is great. It belongs to the community, so good to have everyone take a degree of ownership in making this a success.
I can see the need for tins or bins of water for herbs so they don't wilt. I'll be putting up a blackboard to note what's on offer too. I can already see that while people are happy to drop things off, they are being a bit shy about taking anything. So we'll need to encourage them to TAKE as well as GIVE. An interest point of contrast in today's world, isn't it?
I took some grapefruit and felt guilty, and that everyone was looking but will get over it. Wonderful idea
