The other day John and I came across a small native tree at the edge of the QEII bush reserve beside the Cottage at Struan Farm that neither of us recognised:
The leaves look almost like snowflakes, don't they? A bit of research revealed something much more mundane: the juvenile form of "Pate," or Schefflera digitata, a native tree found growing in damp parts of bush, along stream sides or shady roadsides here in NZ. The tree eventually grows up to 8m high. The mature leaves look decidedly less interesting, which is probably why we hadn't noticed them before.
