Spuds, finally! This spring we planted two potato patches here at Struan Farm. A cluster of an early variety called "Rocket" in the backyard at Veggie World, and the later variety "Agria" down by the Homestead's back gate beside my heirloom fruit tree rootstock.
Predictably "Rocket" has been anything but. The plants have barely flowered and certainly aren't anywhere near ready. But "Agria" is starting to deliver. So much so that a few days ago we contributed several paper bags of potatoes to the Piopio Community Fruit & Veg Stand.
While we don't eat a huge amount of potatoes on a regular basis, I did pick out some of the smaller ones for our dinner the night of my initial harvest. I boiled them until tender, then sauteed in butter with a sprinkle of smoked paprika. They hit the spot for a late summer dinner with fresh John Dory (St. Pierre) fillets and steamed green beans from the garden.
