I popped away for a few days this past weekend, leaving John to hold down the fort at Struan Farm. Friend Glen recently moved from Doone Cottage, her rural home for many years along the Motueka River outside of Nelson, to be closer to "civilisation" in town. Her new home is along an estuary in nearby Riwaka. It's still quite scenic but just five minutes from town. I was keen to see where she's moved and have a good catch up on how it's all going. At certain times in our lives we make major life changes that rattle the status quo, and this is a rather big one for Glen.
After my visit with Glen I spent a second night in Nelson. The area is well known for its horticulture, there are wineries, fruit stands and markets in the surrounding area full of interesting things, at this time of the year particularly. As someone known to brake for apples and pears I was in seventh heaven!
Later in the day I had a chance to wander around town, browse the shops and galleries, have dinner at my favourite restaurant, Hopgoods, and then hit the fantastic Saturday market before flying home. I came home with lemons, pears, and seed garlic in my suitcase, as well as a grapevine wreath. A fun, quick autumn getaway!
