Did you know that Piopio had the very first school bus in all of New Zealand? Above is a photograph from the archives at the Alexander Turnbull Library/National Library of New Zealand, we have a print of this image hanging in the Cottage here at Struan Farm. It was believed to have been taken between Paemako and Piopio circa 1924-25.
But the special news is that a group of dedicated locals and their supporters have been working for several years now to fundraise and build a replica of this early bus, along with a place for it to be on display. They've been able to get the replica bus built, and are close to finishing the purpose-built "garage" where it will be housed for all to see. This is right on Moa Street (SH3) between the Mustard Seed Op Shop and the Community Hall in Piopio village. It is also conveniently located near the Piopio Community Fruit & Veg Stand.
Can't wait for everything to be finished and the grand opening!
