Yesterday I was popping some things into the spare fridge in our garage here at Struan Farm when I saw several ziplock bags of walnuts that I'd popped into compost many months ago now. They hadn't sprouted when the damsons and copper beech had. I'd been tempted to toss them out, but hadn't.
And guess what? Three were sprouting! Seemed they had just needed a bit more time. These are huge walnuts given to me by Hester. Hester of Mahoenui, she of the heirloom white peach and yellow delicious apple I'm also working to propagate. I'd seen and been intrigued by the nuts on her walnut tree. She'd told me I should be able to grow some trees from nuts so I thought I'd give it a try.
So now I'm seriously trying!
