I pulled into the entrance to our drive off the main road here at Struan Farm the other day, and was stopped dead by a rather curious sight:
A native wood pigeon, "kereru," standing on the concrete cattle stop on the track/drive that heads down to the pond. I popped the car into park and decided to watch the bird with camera (phone) in hand. It wasn't at all fussed by my presence, so is most likely the same bird we've had munching on plum trees in the orchard this past spring.
Given the lack of rain the cattle stop has dried out, so it wasn't in search of water. Especially since there are much easier places to find that: stock troughs, pond, even bird baths that we keep filled when it's dry like this. So there must have been some sort of tasty tidbit down there, that's all I can assume!
