I'm doing my best to eke out this summer's tomato crop through the lockdown period here at Struan Farm and New Zealand. Indications from the daily briefings at 1 p.m. seem to be that lockdown could very well need to be extended, so we're not eating ourselves out of house and home but rather pacing the provisions on hand, including what we grow here. We're trying to avoid any trips further afield to the grocery store, opting if need be for our local dairy for milk and other minor essentials. Neither John nor I have left the property since lockdown.
I've pulled up and composted the tomato plants that have done their dash, with dead or slimey branches, but have left those with healthy ripening fruit. Once any fruit gets remotely pink (or yellow in the case of the Moonglow, Mini Orange or Tangellas) I pop them into the kitchen to finish ripening.
It's these little things that can lend an air of normalcy to our current situation.
