This past week I learned that abutilon flowers are edible! As you probably know I'm always interested in expanding my knowledge about gardening and growing, especially food. For the past several years I've grown a dedicated edible flower garden with nasturtiums, borage, cornflowers, calendula and violas. I also love the flowers of herbs such as coriander, parsley, chives, and dill. Rose petals are edible, and also apparently snapdragons.
We have several different colours of abutilons growing around Struan Farm. They self seed and are grown easily from cuttings, turn into nice flowering shrubs for wooded areas. Native tuis love them, as do bees.
They're sometimes called "Chinese Lanterns," and you can see why. Decided to pop them atop my birthday cake yesterday, and love the way they look. Suspect the petals might be interesting crystallised too.
