I decided we need to find our fun where we can at the moment, so this morning went out to the main orchard area here at Struan Farm, where the Monty's Surprise apple tree grows heavily laden with fruit.
The quantity and size of the apples is so great this season that I've been working to use the apples falling onto the ground each day, I haven't been picking them off the tree at all just yet. Only two-three of these make a reasonably sized apple crumble, so you can understand the job ahead not to waste this fruit.
Today I made an exception to my rule about picking, in my quest to find "Mr. Big." And no, before you ask, this is not Mr. Big from "Sex in the City," or a manhunt for gangsters out there with similar names. We're talking fruit, as we often do here at Struan Farm. Specifically the largest apple grown in 2020.
I stopped after filling a trug with likely candidates:
And while these are all very big apples, there was one standout, at 570 grams (1 1/4 pounds):
He's Mr. Big, for now.
