I'm ready to pull out the last tomato plant still standing in Veggie World out in the backyard here at Struan Farm. It's always a sad day.
There are a few remaining tomatoes sitting on the kitchen window sill that we've been savouring/rationing, but they're almost gone. The plants look bedraggled, spent, and often dead or slimy at the end of the season, but I'm reluctant to pull them out while fruit may still be ripening.
During lockdown we've been digging into the stockpile of frozen roasted tomatoes and "BBC tomato soup" dating back a year or so. I'm happy to have them--tomatoes from the garden are versatile to cook with, healthy, and delicious.
Now we'll see what happens with the tomato plants growing in the glasshouse for the first time. I've been pinching laterals and retying them as they grow, and they're about to flower. Will it be hot enough for the fruit to ripen? Guess we'll cross that tomato bridge when we get to it!
