We've been calling the raised veggie bed down at the Homestead here at Struan Farm the "garden of neglect" for several years now, mostly because it doesn't get regular attention. I tend to plant zucchini, squash, pumpkins and cucumbers there. They like it dry, and we don't get down to water the bed much if at all. What is planted there survives and thrives on whatever rain happens.
This year we harvested a good number of zucchini and scallopini/pattypan squash during summer. Right now three HUGE Big Chieftain butternut squash are ripening, along with a Musquee de Provence pumpkin. Word is they are meant to be picked once the cord/stem dies completely. I'm hoping the butternuts turn orange before that.
I suspect I'll be making soups for the freezer from these, for us and to share.
