The past few days I've cracked into the backyard, aka "Veggie World" at Struan Farm. We're getting close to prime time for planting at the end of October. I've been feeding the garden troughs with compost, blood & bone and manure to refresh them for the upcoming season. Now it's time to turn over the soil in the beds in the ground at the back. Of course weeding is always required, it comes with the territory.
At the moment we've got rocket, radishes, coriander and spring onions growing away in the troughs, with broad beans, garlic and shallots at the back. Per usual I need to encourage the broad beans to hurry it up. I plant them for nitrogen, flowers for the bees, and beans if we manage to get them in the short window of time. They'll be pulled up for tomatoes shortly. I rotate tomatoes and corn between these two back beds with the supporting wood and wire frames each year.
Now comes the back breaking work of cleaning out the cracks in those paving stones, ugh! Once I've done some reasonable digging the job gets finished with a light water blast to blow away whatever I've missed.
